Summer to Fall Advice

Well, Indian Summer or not, it’s time to START thinking about our Fall duties in the yard . . . mainly, mark your calendar to start buying bulbs – Tulips, Daffodils, Narcissus, Crocus, Hyacinths and Alliums in early September for the best selection at the nursery. Then planting them later in the month and into October and November depending on the weather.

Early Fall Sales on Trees, Shrubs and Perennials start happening in September culminating in our Oktoberfest the first weekend in October (more information to follow!) Come in this month to see what the nurseries are offering weekly – it’s worth it.

How’s your Fall Color? Now is the perfect time to assess your late summer/fall landscape. See how your yard colors up . . .

Summer to Fall Advice Continued..

Weeds are still actively growing into fall. While the daily temperatures are still above 65 degrees, it is a good idea to continue getting a handle on your weeds (See Summer 2010 article) fall spraying can be quite effective!

Late fall is a good time to control Crabgrass in your lawn for next year. You can apply a pre-emergent at this time.

Fall Clean up:  It’s a little early in August but, come mid- late September you can start getting your yard and planting areas ready for winter. Tasks include:

            General Clean-up

Mulching – adding Compost, Gypsum, Soil Pep to planting areas and around trees, shrubs and tender perennials and tea roses if you have attempted them!

Pruning Potentilla and other plants that appreciate fall trimming

Pruning back perennials BUT careful not to cut them back too far – Protect the ‘crowns’ with this years’ foliage to guard against winter kill!

Stop in to the nurseries for more instruction and enjoy the season of change!

Learn and improve your soil! We’re still learning . . . let’s all learn together!
