Summer 2007

Wow, what a ride. . . from the 70’s and 80’s down to freezing, a teasing precipitation before a rising thermometer! Spring to Summer transition in the mountains.

Is it safe to plant? When is the last frost? And oops, I lost my marigolds and impatiens last night. Oh well, plant ‘em again or switch to pansies.

Summer comes. . . with gentle blooms and a rash of aphids and holy leaves and black spots and weeds. Lots of solutions to resolve most of your bug, weed and fertilizing situations. Always, ALWAYS read the full label before you apply anything to your yard.

FERTILIZING: We highly recommend all the Baicor® Natural and organic based products.
Gene’s Green for turf and plants needing extra nitrogen
Nutra-Green for flowers, trees and shrubs
Iron-Combo Chelate for evergreens and plants with iron deficiencies – yellowing leaves/chlorosis
Soil Stimulator – a buffer with micro-nutrients andB1 complex to stimulate better root circulation. Great in conjunction with other fertilizers!

Don’t forget to fertilize flower pots once a week. Amaze your friends with how beautiful and big your flowers are. For the less diligent gardener, plant with Osmocote – slow release fertilizer granules!

Milorganite and Morgro 16-16-8 are still our favorite all-purpose fertilizers.

Rootstarter should be used for the first 2 seasons on trees and shrubs!

Fertilizer stakes are good as long as there is enough moisture to disintegrate the stakes!

SPRAYING FOR WEEDS! Remember:

Non- Selective means it kills everything.

Selective Broadleaf Kills most anything with a broad leaf structure – including desirable flowers. Can be used in turfgrass!

Selective Grass kills any number of grasses – sometimes within bluegrass like a selective crabgrass killer or others kill grass within broadleaf flowers – a real bonus for hard to weed beds.

Frequently it will require 2-3 application to achieve your desired goal and best results occur when the temperature is above 70 degrees.

Also, when spraying for weeds it is a good idea to make a “chemical cocktail” which includes the herbicide, spreader sticker or foliar friend, soil acidifier and a small amount of liquid fertilizer – actively growing weeds die harder and faster!

INSECTS: Luckily our insects are small in number compared to the rest of the world – pay attention. Preventative measures like pre-season dormant oil pay off in the long run. If you need to spray or sprinkle later, read labels and apply accordingly!

I’m really into the
Bioganic Insect Killer for ants right now. If the nest is really huge, Turf-Ranger is the call.

Repeat applications of
Safer Insecticidal Soap for aphids or a sure shot with pyrthrines or permethrin.

Enjoy the fruits of your Spring Efforts:

BBQ Heartily
Keep frost cloth handy in case of that one more frost – cool nights sneak up on us!
Remember all the years it has snowed on July 4th
Summer is all about yard art – put it out there. Use it and enjoy it – benches, arches, pottery, gongs/bells, water features, fun garden stakes, bird baths and feeders and houses.

See you in the fall – Bulbs, Fire pits and Wildflower Seed.

Plant all Summer – the hotter it is, the shorter period of time the root ball can be exposed to the sun – DIG holes BEFORE your get the plants.

CHECK your strings on all Balled and Burlapped trees and shrubs that have been installed in your yard. Dig at the base of the trunk and make sure the strings have been cut – you don’t want them to choke and die!
