Spring
Newsletter: Here’s a little spring advice
Welcome to another growing season. It sure has been a tumultuous
spring with snow flurries, rain and gorgeous sunny days. If you
have the fever, don’t get too far ahead of yourself. Start
prepping your soil in any areas you are hoping to plant this
year. Add Soil Pep, Gypsum, Compost, Soil Sulfur.
Be careful what you purchase plant-wise as our temperatures are
still hovering in the 20’s overnight – definitely grounds for
freezing! You are safe to plant hardy trees and shrubs that have
been acclimated; pansies and violas that were NOT grown in a
greenhouse. If the leaves are too pale green and too pretty,
they are going to suffer. Perennials, the same!
Don’t go crazy on ground-covers in pony packs right now, the
ground frost will cause them to heave and you will be down on
your knees replanting them.
SEED, SEED, SEED.
If your soil is ready, (no weeds, bare ground), now is the ideal
time to get them in for flowers in early July – if the weather
cooperates. Remember, the more existing weeds and grass, the
less the seed can compete, sorry.
Pruning
– if you have any branches that are obviously dead, you can cut
your losses now and make for healthier plants when they bud out
and leaf.
I don’t want to babble on, come in to the nursery and speak with
a member of our sales team. We are excited about the new season
and look forward to seeing you. The plants we have been
receiving this season are phenomenal – check them out at one or
both of our locations. Ann
