SEASONAL TIPS
If
you have turned your Sprinkler System OFF (like you should have) and there
has been minimal precipitation, you need to hand water your trees and
shrubs - especially newly planted ones. You do not want your plants to
freeze dry - damp is best.
As
long as you can dig a hole, you can plant trees and shrubs. Plant only
plant material that has been ‘hardened off’ at elevation.
Plant
Paperwhites around Thanksgiving for blooms around Christmas.
If
you had problems with Crabgrass and Spurge in your lawn last summer, Use
Pre-Emergent on your lawn now to prevent the situation next year.
Enjoy
the weather for its unpredictability.

MONTHLY ARTICLE
More of a thought on the
changing of a Season
November
is a time of quiet. Where we give up summer and the growing season and
wait for the onslaught of winter - storminess and holidays. It is a time
of Thanksgiving. Recognizing what we have and what we can give away.
It is
a time of redecorating, acknowledging the passage of another season.
I
think it is very important to take some time in our busy schedules to slow
our pulse and go dormant for a little while.
Everyone
has their own way.
One
way to acknowledge the change is to create. Designing your own wreath or
harvest centerpiece is kind of fun. Begin with a blank slate - a basket,
bucket, pot, blank wreath or twigs. Then, go around your yard collecting
things with different textures and colors. Add Pods and Eucalyptus for
fillers - Pinecones, branches, grasses, gourds, pumpkins, spent seed
heads, dried herbs, sage brush tassels, deer antlers, whatever you can
find or imagine. Put it together and let it remind you of your good
fortune and bounty. It doesn’t have to be beautiful to anyone but you!
PLANT OF THE MONTH
Red Twig Dogwood
Cornus sericea
Zone 2
Red
Twig Dogwood is an extremely versatile shrub. It tolerates full sun to
full shade. It is an excellent hedge, wind block, privacy screen and
accent plant.
The
bright red twigs from Fall through Spring provide excellent coverage for
birds and are a relief to look at in contrast with other more drab fall
colors and textures.
Varieties
of Dogwood range in height from a dwarf groundcover (Kelseyi Dogwood) to a
5-6' variety (Isanti Dogwood) to other taller varieties that get 8-12'
tall and almost that wide.
Dogwoods
at elevation are not the magnificent trees from other elevations but, they
do produce a pretty, white flower in Spring followed by a berry and a
purplish-red fall color.
Super
Hardy, very useful.
