Welcome to the Growing Season
A Little Lesson on Mice, Rabbits and Voles
As you can guess, a nursery has a few leftover plants each season. We
‘heal ours in’ in a back corner and see what happens - Some die, some come
back but not very strong and a few act like winter never happened showing
up strong and vibrant - a match to any ‘new’ plant arriving fresh from the
growers.
It is always more stressful on plants when they are wintered over above
ground as opposed to in the ground. Once planted, they have a more
realistic survivability.
Because of the snow pack this year, the mice, voles and rabbits were very
active in many yards and in our leftover perennial patch. They ate roots
and dug tunnels amongst the 4" pots and 1 gallon drain holes - chowing all
the way.
Oddly, in the midst of the chaos, several varieties were completely
ignored. Luck or taste preference, I’m not certain, but here is our little
list:
*Bitterroot/Lewisia
*Foxglove/Digitalis
*Golden Banner/Thermopsis
*Iris
*Jacob’s Ladder/Polemonium
*Lady’s Mantle/Alchemilla
*Lily of the Valley/Convallaria
*Maltese Cross/Lychnis
*Primrose/Primula
If your yard is riddled with disaster, these aren’t fool proof but a
pretty smart bet
PLANT OF THE MONTH
CLUMP CANADA
RED CHERRY
Prunus
virginiana ‘Schubertii’ Zone 2

click on the image and use your browser back
A variation on the single stem Canada Red
Cherry or Schubert Chokecherry. Clump Canada Red Cherry is a super-hardy
with very attractive multiple stems - a shape sure to turn heads.
It sports a fragrant, chokecherry cluster blossom. New leaves are green
flushing to purple with a two-tone period before the entire leaf turns a
deep purple. They defoliate in fall leaving attractive bark and winter
silhouette.
Canada Red Cherries are extremely drought tolerant so, don’t over water.
They can withstand windy sites, varied and poor soil conditions. (The less
windy a site, the better any Tree can perform - plant in groups when
dealing with high winds!)
A yard is not complete without at least one of these. Great Contrast
plant, Wind Screen, Privacy Barrier, Ornamental. . . The Plant with many
uses.

Q. Can I lay sod on the existing soil
in my yard?
A. If you do, you will probably end up
with a lumpy, water-wasting lawn. The more soil and amendments you add
initially, the better your finished product will be. . . like building a
foundation to a house.
Additional
Topsoil and Gypsum are a must. If it is
financially feasible, Soil Pep and/or compost is a definite bonus. Don’t
forget the Sod and seed starter fertilizer.
Remember, try to keep your sod areas to a minimum and look into
Netafim Drip Irrigation for the most water
efficient lawn you’ve ever seen!
Q. My Pots and Planters in Full Sun
look ‘crummy’, what can I do to improve them?
A. There are a few little tricks for
getting annuals to perform in hot, windy sites:
1) Be careful which varieties you
choose. Most plants do better with a little shade but, if you can’t offer
that, go with Supertunias, Petunias, Medium Snapdragon, Verbena, assorted
Sedum and other succulants, Vinca (the pretty, hardy annual with all the
colors!), Osteospermum Daisy, Geranium and any other plants you may have
discovered.
2) Use Nutra-Gel®
a water storing crystal with a slow release fertilizer - These granules
really help with the watering process.
Q. Speaking of Water Saving Gels, How
about them?
A. The verdict is out, they save water
