SEASONAL TIPS

See the August 2002 newsletter and the July 2003 newsletter.
Use available water on Trees, Shrubs and perennials. Allow your lawn to ‘suffer’. It’s natural for grass to go into a heat induced dormancy.
Add Mums to your flower pots and planters for some late summer color.
Please, make sure your sprinkler system is performing efficiently - there is NO EXCUSE to waste water due to faulty heads and leaks. The technology is right here! (Click to Services/Sprinkler Barn)
Bored with your landscape? Have a Park City Nursery Consultant come to your yard for an hour. Change can be fun and good!
Retrofit your Sprinkler System to Drip! (See this month’s article). You still have time. Be ready for next summer.
Check your Tree Strings. See the Seasonal Tips April/May 2002.
Fertilize your trees and shrubs with a mild, organic fertilizer like Milorganite®
Enjoy Dog Days of Summer. . . drink sun tea, homemade mint lemonade and melting ice.
Late August, start thinking about purchasing your spring blooming bulbs.

PLANT OF THE MONTH

Potentilla

-otentilla fruticosa/potentilla cinquefoil-Zone 2

  Potentilla        Potentilla

Potentilla  Potentilla

Potentilla bloom ALL summer once they start. Tolerate full sun to part shade.

They are relatively fast growing and get 2-5' tall depending on the variety.

They have blooms from creamy white to pale and bright yellow, pink and reddish orange. The foliage ranges from needle like to a bit wider; pale green to glossy.

Potentilla can be pruned back in the Fall or Spring to avoid woody stems. We recommend waiting 1-2 seasons before whacking them back. Although they are quite hardy, they are susceptible to some winter dieback.

New plants NEED to be kept wet to avoid shock. Once established potentilla are relatively drought tolerant.

A fine low growing shrub for high elevation.

TROUBLESHOOTING

SYMPTOM: This is a good year for some insects - Aphids, mosquitoes. . .

COMMENT: They are not nearly as bad in places people took preventative measures. In early Spring, on deciduous trees, use Dormant Oil. At first signs on leaves, use your weapon of choice: Lady Bugs, Insecticidal Soap, Bug-A-Tak, Diazinon, Malathion. If the infestation has progressed, try Rose Food Systemic Granules or Pyrethrins.

SYMPTOM: Drying Lawn. . .

COMMENT: Polymers, Polymers, Polymers. It’s not too late to spread a layer over your yard. Available at the Nursery. See Organic Lessons July 2003.

SYMPTOM: Spruce - Tip Weavil damage. Very apparent dead tops on your spruce. . .

COMMENT: Cut the tops out now. Well below the apparent damaged area.. Cut deep into the clean wood. Dispose of waste in sealed container.

Retrofitting your sprinkler system to drip

                            OVERVIEW

Netafim is the world leader in drip irrigation. Since 1965 Netafim has pioneered the science of subsurface, on-surface and point source drip irrigation and manufacturing. Serving more than 70 countries worldwide, sales in 1999 will exceed of $300 million.

Techline has been used successfully in landscape since 1987 in North America. It has been field tested at the Center for Irrigation Technology in Fresno, California since 1989.

Landscape Architects, Contractors, Nurserymen and Designers recognize the benefit of using low volume and drip irrigation for new plantings, because of its accelerated plant growth compared to overhead spray and rotor irrigation. Couple the growth proliferation with the dramatic savings of water and drip becomes a technology that is being demanded by customers.

With Netafim landscape products, architects, designers, and contractors have a new, highly sophisticated way of solving client and installation problems by bringing high quality drip and subsurface components to growing plants, trees,
shrubs, groundcover, and yes, even turf!

               DESIGN CRITERIA

Designing with Techline follows many of
the same rules as designing with standard
overhead irrigation.

Point of connection, static and operating
pressures, flow rates, and type of materials being irrigated are the same.

Designing similar areas into a zone and not mixing dripper output and dripper line
spacing is just like sprinkler design.

The essential differences include knowing the type of soil you are working with, and
the use of a “grid” layout in the design.

What is drip irrigation?

Drip irrigation is the process of delivering precise amounts of water and nutrients directly to the plant's root zone, drop by drop, offering growers exact irrigation control and efficient use of limited water resources. It is the quickest and easiest way to install irrigation for shrub beds, narrow strips or areas bordering buildings, walls, walkways and streets.  Just snake it around the plants, secure it with soil staples every few feet and cover with mulch.

Why should I use drip irrigation?

Shrubs and plants will thrive. Application of water and nutrients directly to the plant's roots is the best way to ensure plant health and vitality.

Dripperline installs easily in tight, awkwardly shaped areas that are hard to water with conventional spray systems. Netafim USA Techline dripperline's flexible tubing adapts to any planting area shape.

No damaging spray on buildings, windows, fencing, or pedestrians in high traffic areas. Avoids unsightly brown spots on roses and other flowers, since spray never touches the plants. Soil and foliage are kept dry, reducing fungal diseases.

No moving sprinkler parts to have to repair. Installs with far less labor than sprinklers.

Hidden under mulch or beneath the soil. Doesn't interfere with landscaping or scenery

Netafim USA dripperline is far more water-conserving than sprinklers. Water loss due to evaporation, mist, surface runoff or wind interference is eliminated.

Dripperline is far more cost-effective than sprinklers as it saves both time and money. Decreased labor to install & maintain plus lower overall material cost.

No exposed sprinkler heads, pipes or surface dripperlines to trip on or tamper with.
